We were given wonderful advice; "You can build a house in a year but it takes ten or more to build a wonderful garden -so start that first". We wanted colour and thus planted deciduous trees that would create a patchwork of interconnected colours especially in Autumn. An abundance of water enabled us to also establish a coattage garden with ice-berg roses skirting the stone tower. We chose fox-gloves, roses, irises and gardenias to present to the courtyard with camelias and magnolias serving as a backdrop. Late in the year the agapanthus and hydrangeas flower and Easter brings its pink lillies. We make preserves from the mulberry, fig, stonefruit and citrus trees.
